Blipply launches Kenya’s first universal QR payment for informal merchants

Stockholm — Today, Blipply announces the roll-out of Kenya’s first merchant QR payment system fully compliant with the Central Bank of Kenya’s KE-QR Code Standard 2023, enabling informal merchants to accept payments from any mobile-money wallet or bank-app through one QR code.

Until now, informal business owners across Kenya have faced steep hurdles to go digital: multiple wallet apps, bank accounts, till numbers, making digital payments complex, costly and exclusionary. Many therefore still rely on cash or lose customers whose wallets aren’t supported.

With the new solution:

  • One QR handles all wallets and bank apps
  • No bank account or till number required for merchant onboarding
  • Instant settlement into the merchant’s wallet; each payment builds a digital record and credit profile

Why this matters

This launch addresses the heart of Kenya’s payments gap: inclusivity. By eliminating barriers for informal merchants, market stalls, roadside vendors, mama mbogas, boda riders, the new system brings them into the digital-payments ecosystem, increasing customer reach, reducing cash risk and unlocking digital-finance opportunity.
